How to Prevent Childhood Obesity

How to Prevent Childhood Obesity

Childhood obesity is a serious problem plaguing many children, and the dangerous part is that many parents do not realize it. A common misconception is that a chubby child is a healthy child, but this is simply not true! Children who are overweight are being put at a higher risk for a number of serious health conditions including diabetes. In fact, problems arising from being overweight that usually affect most senior citizens, such as heart attack, can become a very real threat.

Sharon Baptist Head Start is a child day care center that values the health of your little ones! Through our many educational programs, we put a lot of effort in ensuring that your child can get proper physical activity on a daily basis to help combat childhood obesity. However, in order to be effective and to keep your child in the best health possible, you need to start at home.

  • Exercise:
The first step to beating childhood obesity is through regular exercise. There are many forms of exercise your children can do that range from playing to even joining sports as they get older. As long as they are getting regular physical activity, they are doing their part in maintaining a healthy weight. Exercise can also provide a number of other health benefits, such as increasing physical strength, more energy, and it can also help improve the moods of your children.
  • Diet:
A big reason why many children are overweight is because of their diets. They either eat too much or their diet consists of mostly junk food. By providing them with healthier alternatives, it is much easier to control their weight and to make sure they are in the best health possible. It is true that many kids hate vegetables or healthy food, but it is important to get them to eat better food, so they can live a healthier life later on.
  • Encouragement:
Your children need your support. If a child is having problems with weight, any form of reassurance and understanding from parents will go a long way. Children can really benefit from role models too. So, if you want your child to be encouraged to live a healthier lifestyle, you can do it by living as an example. Show your child that exercising and eating healthy are important by practicing them yourself.

The battle of childhood obesity starts at home! However, we are here to help you ensure your child remains in the best health possible.
